Parent and Family Engagement Policy

Pointe South Middle School

2020-2021

In support of strengthening student academic achievement, Pointe South Middle School receives Title I, Part A funds and therefore must jointly develop with, agree on with, and distribute to parents of participating children a written parent and family engagement policy that contains information required by section 1118(b)(1) of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015(ESSA).  The policy establishes the school’s expectations for parental involvement and describes how the school will implement virtually a number of specific parental involvement activities, and it is incorporated into the school’s plan submitted to the local educational agency (LEA).

Pointe South Middle School agrees to virtually implement the following requirements as outlined by Section 1118:

  • Involve parents virtually, in an organized, ongoing, and timely way, in the planning, review, and improvement of programs under Title I, Part A, including the planning, review, and improvement of the school parent and family engagement policy and the joint development of the school wide program plan under Section 1114(b)(2) of the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015(ESSA).Update the school parent and family engagement policy periodically to meet the changing needs of parents and the school, distribute it to the parents of participating children, and make the parent and family engagement policy available to the local community.
  • Provide full opportunities virtual, to the extent practicable, for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children, including providing information and school reports required under Section 1111 of the ESSA in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request and, to the extent practicable, in a language parents understand.
  • If the school wide program plan under Section 1114(b)(2) of the ESSA is not satisfactory to the parents of participating children, submit any parent comments on the plan when the school makes the plan available to the local educational agency.
  • Be governed by the following statutory definition of parental involvement and will carry out programs, activities, and procedures in accordance with this definition:

Parental involvement means the virtual participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring:

(A) Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning

(B) Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school

(C) Parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child

(D) Other activities are carried out, such as those described in Section 1118 of the ESSA

 

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE SCHOOL WILL IMPLEMENT REQUIRED SCHOOLWIDE PARENT & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT POLICY COMPONENTS

 

JOINTLY DEVELOPED

Pointe South Middle School will take the following actions to involve parents virtually in an organized, ongoing, and timely manner in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs, including opportunities for regular meetings, if requested by parents, to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their child and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

 Parents are involved in the planning, review, and improvement of the Title I-Parent and Family Engagement Policy and the school improvement plan. Meetings are scheduled at various times of the day, such as morning and evening sessions.  Pointe South Middle School meets with parents at least twice a year to review parent surveys, suggestions, and ideas to improve the parent involvement program and the school improvement plan at our school. These meetings provide parents the opportunity to provide suggestions and to participate in discussions relating to the education of their child(ren).

ANNUAL TITLE I MEETING

Pointe South Middle School will take the following actions to conduct an annual meeting virtually, at a convenient time, and encourage and invite all parents of participating children to attend to inform them about the school’s Title I program, the nature of the Title I program, the parents’ requirements, the school parent & family engagement policy, the school wide plan, and the school-parent compact.

COMMUNICATIONS

Pointe South Middle School will take the following actions to provide parents of participating children the following:

  • Timely information about the Title I program Virtually
  • Flexible number of meetings virtually, such as meetings in the morning or evening, and may provide with Title I funds, transportation, child care or home visits, as such services relate to parental involvement.
  • Information related to the school and parent programs, virtual meetings, and other activities, is sent to the parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand:

 Pointe South Middle School’s Parent and Family Engagement policy will be distributed virtually to parents via our school website, Virtual Copy will be provided to parents during PAFE Workshops, virtual copy sent home via google classroom with every student, and a hard copy is readily accessible and may be picked up from our Parent Resource Center daily. Pointe South Middle School’s Parent Liaison will ensure all parents stay abreast of school and parent programs/meetings through communication flyers, activity calendars, the school website, and calling post.

SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

Pointe South Middle School will virtually take the following actions to jointly develop with parents of participating children a school-parent compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will virtually share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help children achieve the state’s high standards.

Text Box: Multiple virtual parent meetings were held during the month of August and September to ensure all parents had the opportunity to provide feedback regarding student achievement goals. The school parent compact will be presented during all parent teacher conferences and parents will have the opportunity to provide feedback throughout the year by completing a feedback form with the Parent Liaison. Copies of the compact will also be accessible on the school website and in the main office. Because it is a living document, if any revisions are made, it will be posted on the school’s website.

 

RESERVATION OF FUNDS

Text Box: Multiple virtual parent meetings were held during the month of September to ensure all parents had the opportunity to provide feedback regarding how the parent and family engagement budget should be spent. Hard copies of the budget input form were also sent home with every student via google classroom. All parents were provided the opportunity to complete a budget survey and the feedback was used to determine how to allocate the 1% budget. Pointe South Middle School will take the following actions to involve the parents of children served in Title I, Part A schools in decisions about how the 1 percent of Title I, Part A funds reserved for parental involvement is spent by:

 

BUILDING CAPACITY OF PARENTS

Pointe South Middle School will build the parents’ capacity for strong parental involvement to ensure effective virtual involvement of parents and to support a partnership among the school and the community to improve student academic achievement through the following:

  • Providing parents with a description and explanation of the curriculum virtually in use at the school, the forms of academic assessments used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
  • Materials and training to help parents to work with their child to improve their child’s achievement, such as literacy training and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parental involvement by parents making an appointment only.
  • Providing virtual assistance to parents of participating children, as appropriate, in understanding topics such as the following:
  • The State’s academic content standards.
  • The State’s student academic achievement standards.
  • The State and local academic assessments including alternate assessments.
  • The requirements of Title I, Part A.
  • How to monitor their child’s progress.
  • How to work with educators.

 

Text Box: Parents are afforded the opportunity to participate virtually in a minimum of two parent-teacher conferences annually. Academic based workshops are offered through the Parent Academy to provide parents with hands on strategies to assist their student with learning at home. Family Curriculum Night is also held to support parents in helping their student achieve optimum academic success.

 

BUILDING CAPACITY OF SCHOOL STAFF

Pointe South Middle School will provide virtual training to educate the teachers, pupil services personnel, principal, and other staff in how to reach out to, communicate, and work with parents as equal partners, in the value and utility of contributions of parents and in how to implement and coordinate parent programs and build ties between parents and the school byDuring monthly faculty meetings virtual parental involvement activities and PowerPoints will be presented by the parent liaison and parent volunteers to school staff to build their capacity to work with parents as equal partners.

Pointe South Middle School will virtually provide other reasonable support for parental involvement activities under Section 1118 as parents may request by:

Timely notification regarding upcoming events to be shared via the school’s website, flyers, calling post, and monthly calendars. Informational letters will also be shared and available in both English and Spanish.

 

DISCRETIONARY SCHOOL PARENT & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT POLICY COMPONENTS

  • *Involve parents virtually in the development of training for teachers, principals, and other educators to improve the effectiveness of that training.
  • Provide virtual necessary literacy training for parents from Title I, Part A funds if the school has exhausted all other reasonably available sources of funding for that training.
  • Pay reasonable and necessary expenses associated with parental involvement activities, including transportation and child care costs, to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions.
  • *Train parents virtually to enhance the involvement of other parents.
  • To maximize parental involvement and participation in their child’s education, arrange school meetings at a variety of times or conduct in-home conferences with teachers or other educators who work directly with participating children and parents who are unable to attend conferences at school.
  • Virtually Adopt and implement model approaches to improving parental involvement
  • Virtually Establish a school wide Parent Advisory Council to provide advice on all matters related to parental involvement in Title I, Part A programs.
  • *Virtually Develop appropriate roles for community-based organizations and businesses, including faith-based organizations, in parental involvement activities.During monthly faculty meetings virtual parental involvement activities and PowerPoints will be presented by the parent liaison and parent volunteers to school staff to build their capacity to work with parents as equal partners. During parent academy workshops parents will be given the opportunity to lead parental involvement activities to encourage the involvement of other parents. Community based organizations will also be invited virtually to participate in parent academy workshops and attend school wide meetings. Stakeholders will be given the opportunity to provide input throughout the 2020-2021 school year using feedback forms readily accessible virtually and in the main office.
